you earn tips by your service......if your service sucks.....youll get very little......do a great job.....youll get alot more

I agree 100% I think the industry has became to expectant of gratuity. [censored] If they do there job and and wait on 15 tables on hour it wont take long before they are making more hourly than the rest of us. Nobody ever comes up can gives me a few extra buck for doing my job. But mostly what I leave depends on the person and sometimes how much ive had to drink.

The industry IS expectant of a gratuity - that's why servers only get paid $2.13 per hour. We're 'expected' to make up the rest.

Like many of you I don't necessarily agree with it though, especially in todays age of diminishing service. I do give 15-20% if the service is what I expect, but more and more I have to break that standard because all we get is seated, order taken, and no other service.

I worked at Red Lobster for 6 months, and I believe that tipping 10-15% is fine, if the service was ok. If the service was really good, then 20% is a reasonable number. A good server can make great money, especially if you are attentive to what the customer needs before they ask for it. Most servers have anywhere from 3-5 tables, which are usually seated for most of the evening or during lunch. If during one hour a server has 3 tables and gets tipped $4 per table, then they are making between 12-14 dollars after taxes. That's not a bad wage.

Every time that I go to a place I always look to see how the server interacts with other tables and other wait staff.....you can tell a lot about your server by their interactions with their co-workers

So why would tipping on a percentage scale have anything to do with making up the rest? Also I have known a few that make 3 something an hour. Wherever you get your figure you keep throwing out is a lie to say they all make that.

Actually we are not suppose to do anything but go and eat. A tip is voluntary.

If they don't get the equivalent of at least $5.85 after tips then the employer must give them the equivalent. Otherwise the employer is out only $2.13 per hour.

I didn't say all servers only earn $2.13. I thought the term 'minimum wage' was understood by all as being the base starting point.

Later comments by me are based on the notion that the above statement is correct.

While you may know some that make in the $3 range, I know that in this area a significant number still make only $2.13 (even those that have been servers for years).

I was agreeing with you in my previous post. The industry just expects the consumers to pay for the bulk of the servers wages (but service received doesn't always give good reason for us to tip like that)...

I tip based on service, and whether or not Daughter #1 is with me. Since she waited tables to help earn money through college, she is very adamant about tipping based on quality of service and the percentage. I guarantee she'll leave a tip, because she's walked a mile in their moccasins.
